The Spanish media killed the football star
So it’s almost certain that Mourinho will leave Real Madrid, and this is just my opinion on how the Spanish media has their share of the blame, and just like any opinion, it’s free and you don’t need to agree (bahaha I made a rhyme).
I think that he did go crazy in the last few moments of the season, and that he did not act the best way possible in many occasions. It happens. It might surprise people, but he’s human, he makes mistakes, he reacts based on emotions too. But I’m a firm believer that he was driven to madness by the monster we call Spanish media. And when I say driven to madness, I really mean it. They actually followed him around for a week only to try to prove he was working 4 or 5 hours less. That’s some serious stalker business.When he says he wants to leave to a place where he’s wanted and loved, he is totally right. I read Marca and As on a daily basis and I’m surprised he stayed this long. The man can’t cough without the papers saying he’s spreading diseases. Even the mentally strong ones cannot take the constant pressure. And it takes a lot to crack Mou to a level of insanity. From all the years he has been coaching, this is the first time I’ve actually seen him loose his cool and act out on meaningless things.
The Spanish media does not love or want him, they are obsessed. For the good, but mostly for the bad. There’s this sentiment of despise towards him simply because he’s one of the best. Same thing with Cristiano Ronaldo. You don’t see the Spanish newspapers attacking any other player as hard as they attack the Portuguese. That shouldn’t even matter. We’re talking about professionals who give their all for the club they represent. They happen to be from a country you’re not a fan of. Big deal, suck it up.
It’s funny that they defended Pepe so much when they were the ones who slaughtered him and called him an animal numerous times. Fábio Coentrão, that poor guy, in a game where he does 99% of the stuff right they will murder him for the 1% he got wrong. And their number one form of entertainment, let’s not forget: Cristiano Ronaldo. They can’t praise him without either comparing him to someone or disguising a few insults to his personality in it. Low blows, weak stuff.
We all know sports media is extremely biased, but when it comes to a point where you’re pushing away players and coaches, something is seriously wrong. All their life, the people involved in football are taught to not pay attention to what the media says, not only regarding the personal life, but also the professional life. When years of this embedded thought begin to be destroyed, you have to take a step back and think about it.
I’m not saying the Spanish media hates everything even remotely Portuguese. It’s very specific, they hate the successful Portuguese with a certain attitude. You don’t see them lashing out on Eliseu, Bruno Gama, or Pizzi. They seem to love Postiga for some reason that is beyond my understanding. They really didn’t hate Figo that much, only in Barcelona because of the obvious reason. Why? Because Figo had a different feel. He’s calmer, more collected and humble. That’s just his personality. And the circumstances were different: he was inserted in a team full of stars. Not that Real Madrid hasn’t got a bunch of them, but we’re talking about Zidane, Beckham, Ronaldo. This was a team where Figo was just one of them, even a bit outshined by a few.
Besides hating, the Spanish media does their fair share of loving and protecting. San Iker, yes, in the field. I love him as a goalkeeper, he’s one of the best in the world and I’m so glad we have him in Real. But outside of the field, he’s no saint. If you’re gonna blame Mourinho for creating a bad environment in the locker room, you have to equally blame Iker for that too. He’s a bit of a primadonna. And the media has his back all the time, because he’s a very valuable person for Spain. The Golden Boy, El Capitan, a symbol of the hegemony of Spain. I get all that. But that does not give him the right to do and say whatever the hell he wants. As a player, you listen to your coach. If you respect him, he’ll respect you, if you don’t respect him, he’ll put you in the bench.
What I’m saying is that BOTH have their share of the blame. As well as a few of the other players and the staff. But what the Spanish media makes everyone believe is that it’s Mourinho’s fault, exclusively. That Cristiano does not help either. That Pepe is a martyr, but just when he’s not killing everyone in the field. They make you believe in what they want you to believe. And if some people have the autonomy of not drinking every word of it, others don’t. And a major part of the Madridistas in Spain, who have been fed all of these media cooking, will crucify Mou and blame him for everything. They quickly forget the good and focus on the bad.
The result? He’s probably packing his bags and moving to England. It’s not that the media over there is better. They will criticize him when he does something wrong. But they won’t forget what he’s done right, and most importantly, they will give him the benefit of the doubt. It’s a different mentality.
Mark my words: the same newspapers who have printed atrocities against Mourinho will be the same ones who will beg him to come back in a few years time. And he does not forget. I think our chances of ever getting him back are ruined. I’m very sad because for me, he’s the best coach in the world. You might think I’m defending him because I’m Portuguese, but I tend to forget that fact most of the time. He’s just the Special One, I don’t care where he comes from. He did an amazing job in every club he’s ever been in, and he’ll continue to do that, if he’s given the chance. But that was clearly not given to him in Real Madrid.
